Located within the Ministry of Culture, the Service interministériel des Archives de France (SIAF) defines, coordinates and evaluates the national policy in terms of archives. It works with the Archives Nationales and more than 800 public archival services (archives départementales, municipales, etc.) in the recollection, conservation, diffusion, and promotion of archival materials.

Led by the SIAF in partnership with the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of European and Foreign Affairs, the FranceArchives portal is the national portal for French archival metadata. As such, it provides a search in the inventories produced by a hundred or so national archival services, both public and private; it promotes the collections and activities of these institutions; and it is regularly enriched with new search tools. It feeds the Archives Portal Europe and publishes inventories in open data. Based on free and open code technologies, the portal aims to promote best practices in the use of international standards and to become the reference for French archival metadata in the web of data.
